On 11 December 2024, the Federal Cabinet adopted the German Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change 2024 (DAS 2024).
The DAS 2024 contains 33 goals and over 180 measures aimed at arming society, the economy, nature and infrastructure against increasing extreme weather events such as heatwaves, drought, heavy rainfall and flooding.
For the first time, this strategy sets measurable climate adaptation targets that allow progress to be tracked transparently. These steps are based on the Climate Adaptation Act of 2023, in which the Federal Government committed to presenting a precautionary climate adaptation strategy with measurable targets. The targets are assigned to the seven areas of infrastructure, land and land use, human health and care, urban development, spatial planning and civil protection, water, the economy and overarching topics.
The strategy was developed in a broad-based cooperation and participation process and is to be updated every four years. In accordance with the law, the achievement of objectives is measured by a monitoring system using indicators. On this basis, the objectives and measures are reviewed and, if necessary, further developed.
